Ever since I lived with my folks (many, many moons ago) I've built or bought shelving to put things on display. When I moved into the city, those shelves that could be moved came with and I purchased others over the years to accommodate a burgeoning collection. Even my one bedroom apartment was plugged full. I slept in the living room and used my bedroom as a gaming parlour; table in the middle surrounded by shelving units on all sides. It was crazy.
Finally, at one point I had two giant glass cases to put them in. They were HUGE and really, really heavy. Each was six feet long, four feet high and three feet deep with four shelves in each plus hidden storage underneath. They used to be part of a cash out display at a department store. They held about 500 miniatures each! How I got them up my four story walk up by myself is a tale for around the game table, but needless to say I had them for years until it became no longer practical to cart the things around when I had to move.
I sold them for a pretty penny and picked up some smaller shelving units that were easier to move but held less miniatures, so I had to improvise until I bought my current place. The previous owners used to make tons of preserves from the fruit and berry bushes on the property (mostly Saskatoons, apples and cherries, but I've since added Raspberries and Blueberries). Since I don't make nearly that much, the cold storage they had built has plenty of shelves for putting miniatures on. Granted, those shelves now house most of my table top gaming miniatures, but right next to them are the old Star Trek shelves.
I like having everything on display, though twice a year I have the painstaking task of having to dust and clean the shelves and the minis that reside there. I'm thinking of building custom shelves next year to accommodate everything, but put glass doors on them to mitigate the dust problem.

A lot of my minis are in six Games Workshop suitcase style eggbox foam insert cases. They can take most FASA designs, except the larger battleships minis.
I've also got various hobby organisers of various shapes and sizes for other minis too. Plus the Heroclix/Attack Wing miniatures are in the boxes they came in when I got them thru the post.
