It's not modeling from our standpoint but, there are companies on Shapeways that 3-D Print miniature planets and stars. Little Planet FactoryDesk ToysLittle Planet Factory seem to have a better line and quality. They have most worlds in more than one size so, insert a stand and place on the gaming table and there you go!

What kind of paint? A lot of paints melt foam.

Most acrylics are safe for styrofoam. I'm pretty sure just about any of the cheap "craft paints" would do just fine.

On the point of styrofoam I used to use food dyes usually stuck well enough for a while and then when you needed too you just topped up the color lol either that or just use apples/organes/etc lol
