"STAR TREK - PICARD"
Just in case any of you were hiding behind the moon, CBS announced a few days ago the return of fan favorite, Captain Picard. It looks like he's returning in his own series for the CBS streaming service, looking at a potential 2020 release. I have to admit to being a bit stoked for this, but, what does this mean exactly? Will he be captain of the Enterprise? Probably not. Patrick Stewart even admited on stage that it didn't seem likely. But, he did say that real time will have passed for the character (since ST-Nemesis in 2002) and that it seems the show will center on Picard. What his role will be is total speculation at this point, but I think it opens up a lot possibilities... Such as; What is his role in this new era of Trek? One idea could center around a theme of mentorship, since it seemed to be a big theme for the character in TNG. Maybe mentor for a new captain of the (new?) Enterprise? Or possibly like his old mentor, Boothby, on the grounds of Starfleet Academy for an aspiring cadet or group of cadets. Would he have kids of his own? One other thought might take us to his acheological background, where we can see him get into some trouble that way, though I'm not sure if an "Indiana Jones" style series about Picard would work. Plus theres the question of age. Even though he looks great, PS is about 70 which, at this point doesn't put him much in the catagory as an action movie star.
Other story ideas of interest; The return of Q, perhaps? If done right, might give the series some depth. Plus Q/DeLancie is a fan favorite. Also, I'm sure we would see the return of some of the TNG crew (and possibly those from DS9 and VOY). Anyway, thoughts on this are welcome.

Another thought; Patrick Stewart said this could be a very different Picard than the one we were used to seeing. This got me thinking about how mundane the average SF officer's job is vs. what we've seen with the adventures of those of Kirk, Picard and those that serve on the Enterprise. We could see a sort of PTSD version of Picard, where years of Q, the borg, the klingons, romulans, time travel and other crazy phenomenon have finally caught up to Picard and taken its toll, and now he's finally got to reconcile a career of crazy shit.

Not sure where they will go with this, if it does go into production. And I'm sure it will annoy people it's on CBS Access. Unfortunately, that is the way some stuff is released these days. Even over here in the UK, it will probably be Netflix, like how I saw Discovery. And that's how TV is anyway, the 'pay for' model. We have the basic SKY TV package, beyond the five main 'terrestrial' channels, or the Freeview selection. PS: Welcome back, calvinboygenius!

Let's all remember that Leonard Nimoy was in JJ Trek... Just because a beloved Trekalumnus is in a Trek show, there is no guarantee that the show will have a low Cool to Suck Ratio.

Especially when JJ, or one of his buds, is involved...
If they had put Nick Meyer directly in charge of the whole project, I would have at least some hope of decent results. At least, honestly entertaining results...

It looks on the surface, like a desperate scrabbling to save the sinking ship that is Trek, thanks to JJJerk's Drek. If they start pulling a tonal shift like Discrapery with this, I'm pretty much out.

Ugh. For what it's worth, I actually like most of the JJTrek, and even STD. Unfortunately, it's not apart of what most fans (including myself) see as canon. This video pretty much spells out the doom of the ST franchise. Live long and prosper. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLl17YXrAZY

Well. Thanks for letting us know it's all about the money. None of them give a shit about the actual integrity of the franchise. Just like for Star Wartz: the Last Jerkoff.

I thought I was pretty harsh on the new Trek and Wars... But I have to agree with "Big Green". The powers that be clearly don't give a flying fornication about the properties they are ruining or the fans who made them rich in the first place.
If you need me, I'll be watching ToS, TNG, DS9 and Orville.

Ok, before I post further, I will say that the following two videos contain some serious SPOILERS about the new Picard show (of course). So if you haven't heard or avoided discussions about these elsewhere, this thread may not be for you now! First off, here's the first trailer, posted on July 20th, 2019... youtu.be/YhBBXHwEsIoAnd the second is one just released a few days ago, on October 5th, 2019... youtu.be/QvKBeOKvblISo, people here haven't been looking forward to this. If you don't want to watch these trailers, I understand. But I will admit, I'm intrigued, and will give it a go whenever it is announced it's out on Amazon for the UK. As I've probably said elsewhere, I've watched season 1 and the first four episodes of season 2 of Discovery. I want to see where they go with that story, but I'm still of the mind that it's in another parallel universe, not TOS continuity. So it will be interesting to see what develops in Picard as a series, and whether it can reconcile as a continuation of the TNG time period.

With all the licensing it HAS to be a separate continuity.
On the one hand the movies should be gone/apocryphal but I bet they will still make him like movie Picard.
On the other it will be sad if he can't have a resican flute in his study somewhere.

trynda1701 - Your necro-posting is noted, and appreciated I can't even bring myself to watch the trailers... Everything that has happened since DS9 has been so disappointing. It really seems like they are in a competition to see how low the bar can actually be set.

Based on the generally crappy "Short Treks" (Ex Astris Scientia gave one o' 'em a 0) have been, I tend to agree. Ex Astris ScientiaVoyager was pretty crap during most of its run and Enterprise was uneven at best. Disco - can't even get interested in trying to attempt to watch it. JJDrek - the first film would probably have been decent as a roller coaster ride if you ignored the "Star Trek" title but, the second was just such a rip-off of Wrath of Khan - without the style and quality. Despite hearing that the last one was supposedly the best of the three - fool me once and all that...

I think what these various companies fail to understand about Star Trek (and any other nostalgia-based movies/merchandise/etc) is that children are imitators of their parents. They generally love and respect their parents.
If the "new" version does not appeal the generation that grew up with it, they will tell their children that they don't like it....that it is stupid. Consequently, the children (being imitators) will adopt their parents viewpoints and also reject the product.
You cannot alienate the base and expect the product to survive.

Ever wonder how much the franchise is actually worth. I mean... there are a LOT of Star Trek fans out there, and for a few $$$ each we could probably BUY it outright.
We might not do anything with it, but at least we would stop corporate [jerks] from sodomizing it.

Oh...poor Sodom (and Gomorrah). Forever sullied...
The "Franchise" - considering merchandising and the sheer number of TV episodes/movies/books etc... - is worth billions of dollars. There are plenty of entire countries that would be cheaper to buy (not that you would want to) than Star Trek!
