So after the recent post by the wonderful atolm with his Klingon SCS design. I got inspired after my reply to build the following project for the Unity! The ship is meant first and foremost to use large fighter wings, as well as a compliment of troops/marines for on the ground operations. So its going to have large space for that purpose plus cargo to back it all up. So in this regard it is a troop/carrier transport. Equipment wise then the focus I made as you'll see below, is it uses a reliable mix of weapons which may not be the BEST per say in a stand up fight, but have more teeth then just say a usual troop/assault transport. Let me know your thoughts!
In the year of 2260 the Unity's Congress was in a heated debate on how it could begin to project its force of arms. Some argued for smaller ships able to be quickly and cheaply built and replaced. Others argued for larger ships bristling with weapons and the like which though built in more limited numbers, would due to their overwhelming power be able to project a force of quality vs quantity in design. In the end as is usual among Kephans a third option came forth from one congressman who proposed research into a large design that would use heavy fighter support in space, and carry a sizable contingent of troops for land operations, then it would be equipped with reliable but easy to produce weapons and the like for ship to ship fights. Debate on this third option continued quite heatedly for another three weeks before finally the Congress settled on a compromise. Smaller ship designs would be fielded for force projection and easy construction. This would result in the 'Junk Yard Era' naval ships and soon after the 'Home Built Era' Navy ships. In turn a small collection of more 'beefy' ships would be designed and built as able during the Home Built Navy Era. The third option that the congressman had put on the table during the debate would be put into the R&D firms among the KSN to study and when appropriate build one or more ships once approval was given.
This fledging period of R&D work went through many heated debates of their own, not to mention many MANY rejections, scrapping, and rebuilding of different frames, ideas, and not to mention cost estimates. Given the fact no one had given the R&D teams much direction on what their final goals to be for submission were chaos was the rule of the day. Finally nearing the end of 2264 a young human Lieutenant and much to the dread of the R&D folks, Knip shipyards Alphonso Fernando De Santa Cruz happened to be brought into 'consult' on the project.
Cruz, the young lieutenant and a few other more 'outcast' designers among the usual R&D folks took the central hulls of the Klingon G-3A cargo transport then as soon would become their usual trademark copy and flip it and weld them together. The hulls were then lengthen beyond their usual diameter and fleshed out as well for carrier and troop use. This created a base hull platform scaling into the massive for the time Class 13-14 range in projections! Undaunted the designers pushed ahead in research over the next several months, designing an X pylon pattern where copies of the Orion OWG-1 drive system would be placed. Further for motive power four Orion OID-3 impulse reactors were mated in a central cluster to the rear of the ship. This arrangement meant that computer designs at the time were not up to the task of managing such drive systems, so while they waited for Orion engineers to catch up with new computer options the designers turned to fleshing out the carrier and troop capabilities of the ship.
Internally much of the ship's volume was given over to the two massive launch bays along the top of the ship's hull with bay doors fore and aft facing with a through deck capability. Between both hangers a total of 40 Pew Pie Class Armed Warp Shuttles. With this complete the designers then turned to the troop and crew support facilities. The entire ship was projected to need 200 standard crew, this was easily accomplished, though later reports during shake down would show the crews on the prototype complained that double bunking was not always a pleasing experience due to the slightly smaller then wished for quarters for two people to share. Marines though assigned to the ship totaled 100. Their single massive bunk room along the ship's port side was agreeable enough for such ground pounders. The shared mess facilities and training rooms sometimes got marines and ship crew into scuffling matches but nothing too bad ever came of it. To support the deployment of these marines 5, 20-man combat transporters were installed just next door to the marine's armory and bunk room. This close proximity to their equipment and living space meant that all 100 marines could be deployed in less then 10 minutes if needed, this though was a huge power draw on the ship when done, usually meaning power for ship weapons and maneuvering were minimal if present at all during such a maneuver. To round out the marine's support they carried supplies for an engagement of up to 3 months, as well as either 4 medium support combat vehicles or 8 light support combat vehicles as the missions needs entailed. The capability to beam down these larger support units were handled by dedicated massive cargo transporters, they could beam down supplies and 1 vehicle every 10 minutes in an emergency of deployment. This was felt slow to some but given the limitations of power and technology for the period forced to be acceptable.
By this point design research had progressed into the year of 2266, with testing of the aforementioned individual systems complete the designers finally got to how to arm and defend this massive ship. Kephan designers settled on 12 OD-5 disruptors arranged in three bank pairings in all firing arcs. These disruptors were not the most heavy hitting but they were quite long ranged and accurate which was deemed far more important, especially if they would provide ground support fire from orbit, having accurate weapons was felt more important to avoid friendly fire incidents. The designers then also settled on 6 OP-4 torpedo systems. 4 of these were mounted in banking forward quadrants, while the last 2 were positioned the same to aft. Again while the system was not to most damaging or even accurate the trade off here was that supply of casings was far cheaper then other options at hand. For defensive systems the ship's design was massively armored both inside and out with reinforcement, giving the hull's weight almost the tonnage going over a Class 14 vessel. Coupled with an Orion OSJ shielding system the designers felt at least defensively the proposed ship could put up quite a fight and absorb quite the punishment. With this all done the final arrival of mating 3 Orion Mark 4 computer cores to the ship was completed. The trio of cores in the end had more processing power then needed to handled the ship's systems, but much of this left over space was given to handling communication with the ship's fighting wing, troop support, and intelligence gathering when on patrols. Robust sensors and communication arrays were installed for this specific purpose.
In the end the final design was submitted mid-2268. The Congress took a look at the cost, and decided that only for now one such ship would be built and deployed. Building was given to Knip shipyards, with supplemental help provided by Orion and Klingon firms, further aide was given by Francis Pharoah and his team in how best to finalize design and launch processes for the Pew Pie armed warp shuttle wings. In the end it was a massive undertaking but by the beginning of 2270 the design was completed and after extensive combat trials, and shake downs the HHS Liberator was commissioned into service to serve for now within the interior of Unity space. The ship is often accompanied at all times by at least 2-3 Puppy Dog Class Light Freighters and 2 dedicated escorts in the form of either Pegasus Class VII Destroyers, and/or Chain Lightning-class Class VII Destroyers or some mix there of other types of destroyers in the Unity's inventory.
