Ok, after having recently posted pictures of my Tholian minis here...

So, first of all, my interpretation of the ship seen in the original TOS episode, "The Tholian Web".

Backstory for the Manual

The smallest Tholian vessel recorded in modern times, but since first contact by the Vulcans, it seems as if the Tholians have fielded similar sized vessels for a century at least.

The initial modern contact was when the USS Enterprise was conducting search and rescue operations for the USS Defiant on Stardate 2/1012, which had become trapped in a 'spatial interphase'. The Enterprise was intercepted by two such vessels, who attempted to construct a tractor field 'web' to capture her, as she was suffering power loss due to the interphase, and being attacked by the first Tholian vessel. The attempt was unsuccessful, but the Defiant was lost in the interphase with the loss of all hands who had perished due to detrimental effects of the interphase on humanoid psychology beforehand.

My Designers notes

Designed following the criteria in my design system in the second link at the top of this post, here's the basic Tholian vessel shown in the episode. This was designed in 1992, and I gave it two basic field tests against Klingons and then Romulans, so the basic web rules work, it was just the depiction of the web that was the problem.

I had just used one centimeter wide stripes of thin card of differing lengths, added together depending on how long a web you 'cast'. These days, you could perhaps get these Tractor Beam tokens to represent web strands as in my system. They're made by Litko, from here...

Any background for these Tholians is based on SFB data, tweaked to fit FASA. A few details will probably sound like I've finched them from swede, but that is because they also appear in SFB, and is not meant to cause offense. I'm just making these backstories up as I post the ships stats! Swedes' posts for his ships are clearly up first on the forum, as can be seen here...

Backstory for the Manual

With the Tholians adopting a more aggressive stance in defending their borders since the Enterprise/Defiant encounter, Starfleet Intelligence took note of increased activity. One such vessel encountered was the Spinner II Destroyer.

This vessel at first appears similar to the Spinner class starship, only slightly expanded and armoured. But scans reveal that it is apparently overgunned and underpowered. Carrying heavier forward beam firepower, supplemented by light beams aft, and a forward and aft torpedo type weapon, this vessel is slower and less maneuverable to boot. Only the Tholians know why they expanded the Spinner class in such a manner.

My Designers notes

This destroyer was designed as there are two types of PCs in SFB, and this represents the PC+ model. Using my design system, this was originally created to be the Spinner Model B, adding heavier forward weaponry, as well as torpedoes, but it doesn't really work. I decided to post this as a new destroyer design anyway, using the Gamescience mini for it, and posting it in the manner of the failed D-7C class and other 'not so optimal designs' (Klingon D-11 and L-13A, we're looking at you! ).

I should have just tried heavier forward weapons on the Spinner Class PC, or adding torps to that design only. But there you have it, a bit of a Tholian 'lemon'!

What I did for my smallest Tholian was to take the front half of the .... dreadnought? was drill a larger hole on the back end, insert a rare Earth magnet, and glue one to the front end- voila! I can use the front end alone (also drilled a hole in the bottom for the stalk), and if I need a battleship class, attach it to the back end.
