I have been playing this for a while... a couple of years I guess. It works and it's actually pretty well done. You can even build/modify ships, and it has a passable AI. I'm guessing most of you already know about it, but in case there are some who do not, the original web site is gone, but the downloads here still work. I'm running it on Win10 (FYI) and it works fine.

Up to 20 total ships. Up to 4 "sides" Can be human v human or human v computer.
Don't think it can do "on line". You'll need Vassal for that.

There is a "Hot Seat" option that allows two people to play against each other, so I guess you could "switch sides", but if you mean fire on a team mate, then no. You can't defect mid battle.
Oh, and as irony would have it, when I created my Shipsheet maker spreadsheet on Exel, I used the sheet model from the computer game as the template for the layout of the sheet. Go figure.

There are in fact nicer counters than the ones being used. They are replaceable.
But I can't get this damn game to display properly on my monitor; the bottom is always cut off, or else the side if I twist it 90deg and flip the display under Control Panel. What resolution are you running your screen at??

There is a Ship Editor included in the game. You can create a ship (any ship), and even load an image from STSTCSOLDA (or anywhere else) so it will appear on the screen correctly. I just wish I could print the ship data in game format.

Have you found Version 2.2 is the best one? I'm new at it, but I can't get the other ship models in the more recent modules.

Are you talking Vassal or ST:STCS?
I am running ST:STCS 2.04 on Win 10 with no issues.
i was playing around with the Ship Editor and found out that you can change the color of the phasers, as well as the sounds for Phasers, Torps, damage, and destruction.
I want to find the guy who wrote this (Jason Robinson) and send him some spondulix!

I did not run into that problem. I was running it on 7 before I upgraded to 10.

Here is the paper sheet I created based off of the ship sheet layout in the PC game. It was done on 2003 XL, but it looks goofy on my current spreadsheet program Open Office. It might need some cleaning up. I can't get the game to run on Vista either. It says I needed a specific code that wasn't included in the Vista system. I downloaded it and tried to install it, but it still doesn't work. Guess I'm still cyber Amish when it comes to this stuff.

I still have an old computer with Windows 7 on in, I'll try it that way.

Swede: Excellent sheet! Thank-you!
Rabid: No problem. I have the Vassal module, but have not yet tried it out.

Well, if anyone other than me manages to get the game to work, we could share ship and scenario files here.

The Vassal module is far less exciting. It's clunky and the controls are obscure. But it's all we have for now.

Can we get a link to the game or site please? The link is in the first post of this topic. The viglink redirect proboards inserts is broken but cleaning the link is easy.

I wonder if I had to do some trickery to get it to run. Did you get the patch?

I just installed it on 64-bit Windows 10 and it works after installing the patch to the beta. Screen display is a little wonky at times though. The starfield bitmap would scroll away when selecting move options but resume correct placement when showing the move.

That is so ODD. I've never had any of these issues.
I'm particularly skilled with computers, so I'll chock it up to luck.

I still have an XP machine where the program runs fine, except for cutting off the bottom of the ship display screen. This means I can never power shield 5 and that isn't cool, but at least it runs. I cannot get the program to even open on Win7.
