I have "OSRIC" which is basically open source AD&D. I read through the rules and ask myself why people did that to themselves. I played it a bit, and mostly liked it, but when the Super Hero RPG's came out, I ditched D&D.

I don't care for D&D but I do still love tabletop roleplaying. I just don't like the system. I prefer simulationist style play and "crunchy" skill based systems. I've been dying to get a GURPS game together, but unfortunately D&D dominates and it's hard to find people to play anything else these days.

I never did play D&D in high school, though I was aware of it. I tried a little of Command and Control in STSTCS, but there was never any great reason to do it that way; it was boring to have only one function, when we could have a 3 vs 2 furball each commanding his own ship. I tried out the Marvel RPG that TSR made next, but found it rather boring. Since we couldn't think up our own scenarios during our teens, it didn't last so long. I next helped my nephews assemble their Hero Quest games in my early 20's, and recognized the possibility to paint the minis, as well as maybe expanding the system. But I was too busy with University, and left it to my younger brother who became the DM.
Many years later, I rekindled STSTCS, but have only been able to play it sparingly, despite much more roleplaying I bring to it now. My cousin wanted to rediscover HQ, so I got hold of a set (his long since gone), he painted the minis, and a group of friends have been playing our homebrew for over 10 years regularly. I tried a little of D&D, but can't really get into it - I find the dice system weird. I'm used to percentiles of STSTCS and skull dice of HQ.

The Super-Hero system I played was Villains & Vigilantes. After that I moved on to Battletech and Mechwarrior. In college (in Michigan's frozen north) we played quite a bit of V&V and BT, and even a little AD&D (which was okay to play, but I would not DM that insanity). I then wrote an published my own tactical game with help from a couple of artist friends. We made a four-issue comic book (that sucked), and tried to do another one, but it never materialized. I rediscovered V&V a few years ago and was accepted by the publisher as a freelance writer. I wrote a few adventures and source books. Kind of a rewarding experience getting to contribute to your favorite old game.
Now I just write games as a hobby. I'm play-testing a WWII fighter system based on the rules for "Silent Death" as well as a super-light system almost based on ST:STSC.

I could see Silent Death working for a WW1 or 2 fighter system...

I thought it turned out well. I just don't have time to write up all the data sheets for the fighters. Conversion is a snap... you just use the published specs. I sent it to game's publisher and they said "DROOL!" I thought that was pretty high praise.

Combat Report: I played a couple of quick games on the PC sim (that I seem to be the only holder of - which sucks). Since I cannot talk anyone in the Game Group into trying ST:STCS, it'll have to do for now.
First Game: Constitution Refit vs Klingon D-7 I never even hit him. Just a series of bad rolls. I maneuvered to keep the D-7 to my port bow and adjusted shields accordingly. For some reason, however, I could never score a hit. The result was a loss of the Enterprise.
Second Game: Reliant vs Klingon D-7 Again, I maneuvered to keep the target to USS Seoul's port bow. After initially charging the IKS Keeper of Blades, Seoul slowed, diverted power to weapons and shields and turned bow-on to the target, scoring three phaser hits and two photon hits, damaging Keeper of Blade's shields and weapons. USS Seoul again slowed to three movement and diverted remaining power to fore and port shields and weapons. Due to an unexpected turn by the target vessel, the Seoul took light damage to the port forward shield and was unable to bring photons to bear on the target. Four phaser hits, however, disabled the Keeper of Blades.
â–ºThis was an atypical engagement. The Reliant does not normally make it through this scenario unscathed.

FRAPS?
ano ang FRAPS?
I guess I can look into it.
<After looking>
Nope. Too bad too. I took a Modified Reliant against two D-7's and took them out. It was just against the AI, so not a big victory. The crew of the USS Seoul is proudly bolstering the ranks of the Black Fleet at ever encounter.

lol so frustrating. It looks like it plays well for everyone else! @ironnerd you can also ctrl+prtscrn and copy files into MS Paint. Do it the old fashioned way.
I keep getting run-time error '339" component 'transpicture.ocx' or one of it's dependencies is not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.
Anyone else encounter this error?
Edit: Nevermind it's activeX. lol I haven't opened a command prompt in so long I forgot how.

Wait... you got it working?
i need a second monitor to use the [CRTL]+[PRINT SCRN] trick. When I run the game it takes up my entire screen and I can't shrink it.

it will save your prnt screen to your pastebin till the end of the game.
As for working, not yet. Im trying to reconfigure activeX control and the next step is to find the name of the program for the command prompt. I couldnt find it...😫

lol no I mean, the exact name of the "transpicture.exe" file so I can create the exception from the command prompt. I couldn't find the file using the command prompt under the name listed in the error message. Sorry should have been more clear.

I've been around and around with this issue as well, and pretty much gave up. I still have an old WinXP box that I may try to bring back up and I know all of those old games work just fine with XP...
I may try playing around with Oracle's free VM tool again but, I'm not too enthused (I work on frickin' computers for a living so...).

That was it! I must have given up too soon (don't ever remember the last time I tried to do anything about it).

Yes - Beta 2.05 is running on a Win7 64-bit system without errors. I'll have to remove that, and reinstall 2.04 and check that but, I don't have time for that right now...
