I placed my first order from shapeways in over five years recently (non-trek related) and I was surprised at the changes. There is practically no info on the new materials on their pages and the info we do have (accuracy) shows it to be alot worse than just 6 months ago with FUD/FED. Does anyone have any experience comparing the old FED with the current equivalent of smoothest fine detail plastic? Also, my models suddenly and mysteriously increased 10% in price right before the 15% off sale started (which was separate from the publicized price increase in October). My order is pending but these changes in 2018 really don't instill much confidence in me unfortunately.

It is a common tactic for companies to raise prices before black friday so that they can give seemingly steep discounts on black friday without it hurting too much.

NO!!! Really?
Yep - common to the point where it doesn't really work anymore...

I've done the base plastic on every model, yeah it's a bit granular but that goes away once you apply some paint apps and then you can hardly tell. You have to use a very airy/dusty primer to get into the gaps. Shiftdel's K'teremny ships will be the first I get in the higher quality plastic so I'll let you know if it's that much better.
It's funny but I'm seeing a lot of shapeways printed ships masquerading as MIB FASA mini's on Ebay.

Oh, most definitely a known scummy move and it's why I caught onto it as soon as it happened the week before Black Friday. I was waiting 8+ months for a free shipping sale that never happened and in the meantime the quality of their finest offering (FED/smoothest fine plastic) has both gone down and the price increased (despite the increased competition from the home printing market that is approaching their previous best level of quality at a $500 entry point). Their motive in hiding detailed info on their best qualities (both to consumers and to producers) is so that they can change prices as they see fit whenever they want from behind a black curtain.

It's more the principle behind the changes and me kicking myself for waiting so long when I could have gotten better for less this past summer. How are folks selling shapeways as MIB fasa? Do they print and glue fake cardboard blisters together? If so, that's some seriously dedicated fakery.

They usually put up a picture from the recognition manual and when you click the pictures you can tell it's a 3d print. There are granular lines on the cheaper 3d prints. Some of them are pretty hilarious actually.
I found this out b/c I have been shopping for a Winged Defender (it's 1/3900 even though my FASA shapeways romulans are all 1/3125) but I keep getting out bid. I don't know why, there's only one good kit of a winged defender on shapeways and it's in 1/5000 scale. I asked the seller to upscale it but no dice.

Ah. I hadn't looked at that person's auctions in years. When I last did, there was no mention of the 3d print and no pic of the miniature either, just the cut/paste image from the recognition manuals. I just mentally filed them under "scammer" and only click on auctions that show the blister or metal model in the first preview pic.

good advice. Too bad about the winged defender though. every full sized model looks like crap. Nashstar has some but they are the Reman/scimitar design variation and while cool, it's not what i'm looking for.

SITZKRIEG! shiftdel I got the K'teremny class ships I ordered in the high end plastic at 1/3125 scale! They look really nice, I can't wait to see how they look painted up! Thank you for putting the flight stand peg on the bottom, I wish more modelers did this. It fits perfectly on the Litko stand with no modifications. I also picked up the Gorn BH2 (2 of them!). I'm impressed with the level of detail you were able to squeeze into the lower grade plastic, it looks just as detailed as the FASA Pewter ships. Also no complaints about the scale, it seems to fit in just fine at 1/3900 ish next to the other ships. Nice work! Sitzkrieg the higher end plastic is a little more flexible than the basic white, the k'teremny came out clear but instead of the bubbly/granular finish of the basic white, it's smooth. I trust that it will bend a little more, the basic white tends to snap. Is it worth the higher price? IF you have that one ship you want to look like a professional/hobby store quality model the high end plastic is worth it. If you want to fill out your fleet and don't mind the ships looking a little "Fuzzy" then go with the basic plastic. I.e. the k'teremny in the high end plastic is great but I think I still like the l-24 I picked up just as much. On the larger models the disparity in quality doesn't show up as much. On smaller ships a lot of detail gets lost.

Good to hear! I got my shapeways order as well and the print quality has definitely improved over the years since my last one. I actually put up a rather lengthy post about it on my blog (should be linked here in my sig) but it wasn't trek related so I didn't mention it. I had a misprint on the biggest fig's weapon but shapeways was quite helpful in making that right so no complaints here. I should have a replacement set of figs in a few weeks (slightly tweaked to avoid the problem) with the store credit they gave me. I'm glad to hear that your's came out so well.

Update: Shapeways modeler Captain Herlock responded to my request to designe a mid-scale winged defender. His other models are tight and he showed me his initial design. He's using the FASA SRM as a guide! www.shapeways.com/designer/capherlockIf you like shapeways models make sure to support the modelers, like Shiftdel, pulsefired, crazy Eddie and ADB!

Nice collection there. I wonder if that Bonaventure is the same 3d model I found somewhere online or if he made that one himself.

Update: the v-30 is almost done and I found a modeler to take on either the Klingon D-2 or the D-20!
I'm trying to find someone to do the V-27 and the indomitable.

I've seen a few other versions of it on shapeways. The modeler says he has the original SRM so I'm happier with his version of the D2 for example.
But what's wrong w the marklin?

It's just not a good looking interpretation of the ship. It seems to draw a lot from the version on the Vintage Starships website. It's an awkward looking ship and not very true to the source image. Of course my opinion is biased, but I like mine a lot more.

That's fair yours is an awesome build.
Speaking of which you mentioned starting shapeways before, are you going to start commercial modeling in some way?
Edit: for anyone else following this, at this time we can say shapeways has almost any ship that has a counter in the original board game in 1/3125, 1/3900 or 1/3788. For many of others there's woomera/bergstron.
We just need: K-23 Merchantman Romulan Graceful Flyer V-30 (pending as of this post). V-9 (a few exist but they are alternate forms at best) Gorn: MD8 Gorn SS3 Orion Lightning
Next I'm going to start hitting up designers for the government specific freighters.

I'm a fan of this take on the Marklin made for some computer game mod. It's too bad it's not downloadable.

Presenting Captain Herlock! He just finished modeling a winged defender in about 1/3125 scale: www.shapeways.com/product/CTJLKDUS4/1-3125-v30-winged-defender-attack-wingAt this length it might look a bit big next to a 1/3900 enterprise but I think it would still fit. He also made the wings separate so the gamer can choose whether to do wings up or down! Very impressed with these 2 modelers as well as pulsefired, they have really responded to requests for some neat ships!0

When did Shapeways get rid of the 3d rotation feature on their model entries? It used to be that you'd order a model and get to spin around it first to check it out from all the angles.
