So like my buddy Brandon had done with the KS-4 Monitor/Scout and the KI-4 Shuttle Tender/Carrier he took the V-1 cruiser the Unity received and made it into a serviceable ship for the KUSN's Romulan outcast colony. The problem he ran into was that by the original FASA stats those RWD-2s put the ship WAY overweight for use! Plus the computer core seems unsuited to working them. So to account for this and to account for the FASA backstory we're going to say that these ships were overweight, underpowered, and constantly had computer use issues due to all this. The outcasts will of course then fix this problem as best they can!
Like other received cast off ships from the Romulan Star Empire in 2265, a V-1 Starglider limped its way with an outcast crew into Unity space. The old ship was well known as a 'clunker' among human circles. A fact not lost on the outcasts as they settled into their new home. However, with the success of the KS-4 scout/monitors and the KI-4 Shuttle Tender/Carriers, these same outcasts hoped to turn their clunker into something approaching some kind of gem for their own use around their colony's system. With help from some sympathetic Unity merchants and engineers the outcasts set to work to rebuild the V-1 into something usable.
Of course this was not an easy task, the R-3M computer and the RWD-2 drive systems at the heart of the V-1 were utterly incompatible and made the class terribly overweight. To this in mind the engineers decided to gut one of the two nacelles of this system. The massive drop in weight was a lifesaver. With the massive reduction in weight and the less complex demands on the overworked R-3M system the engineers now had room to breathe and processing power to work with. The next system to get tackled with the RB-2 disruptor system. Knowledge refinements allowed the RB-2 to be upgraded to the RB-2A, while this meant more weight was gained it was felt acceptable. Further refinements to the vessel's arc coverage for the disruptors were also added to provide an all around better fire support in combat. With the second nacelle gone, the engineers decided to use the empty space in the port wing assembly to house a torpedo launching system that the V-1 had always lacked for punch. However, when this was brought up to the outcasts a bit of their old Romulan pride kicked in, they fused to allow any systems of Starfleet or Klingon design to be placed on their ship. Eventually some back and forth compromise was allowed and an Orion OP-1 launching system was built into the missing nacelle housing with the unique arc coverage allowing forward and aft fire, but also dual fire to port. With room to spare the V-1 under construction had its RIB-1 engine copied and mounted on the last bit of room within the port wing assembly. This gave the class a bit more power and with refinements allowed a bit of an increase in the maneuvering capabilities from before. Further internal rearrangement within the main hull allowed the V-1 to have a reduced crew presence and to allow an expansion of passenger accommodations and recreation facilities. Further cargo bay storage and a single shuttle launch bay rounded out the V-1's redesign. With all this internal redesign further structural reinforcement had to be provided increasing weight but not putting it over the limits for a Class V vessel.
The now termed KV-1 christened the HHS Coral's Dust, named after a nebula to the outcast's colony was put into service at the dawn of 2267, under their command and into the Unity's inventory for use. Like the KS-4 scout/monitors this single ship would patrol within response range of the KS-4's along the internal regions of Unity space as a fast response vessel to support the scout/monitor's in their duties. No plans are in place to produce any copies of the KV-1 nor do the outcast's plan to make any more themselves.
