yeah i found that. I almost did it, but i can't pull the trigger on letting a web page make registry chamges to my computer.
I'll see if i can find a trustworthy source.
It works, do a google search for msvbvm50.exe, find the link to microsoft and download.
It works great, i did 2 massive fleets romulans vs gorn and it plays seemlessly. Only took about 30 minutes.
That klingon AI is a beast though.

Try running the "Balance of Terror" scenario with the Romulans set to human control. Cloakign device control will be directly above the shield allocation display.

I have had the game installed for years. i got it when he first started to work on it and have been enjoying it ever since. And yes it is a great way to get a good fix.
Given the right situation in the AI view, it will cloak ships...

So there are like five of us who have this working. It's a start.
Not only is it fun for a quick fix, it's a nice scenario testing sandbox.

there ae shp files and counter sets out there that allow you to game from the Great Awakening to the Dominion War and even fight the borg. I have even made ship files to fight the Romulan War, but haven't worked on counters for it yet, so you have a bunch of arrows moving on the screen.
It has its limitations, but on the other hand, it still is fun to play, and it gives you a chance to learn what ships can do and what they can't do.
I first ran into the game when i downloaded it way back when Win98 was the rage. I play tested it for J. when he was first writing the game.
To get it to work on the platforms like Win Vista and above, you are going to have to register some files by hand. Those files can be found in the old VBRUN distribution files. from Microsoft. VBRUN300 and VBRUN500 should have what you need in them. Most of my problems were around TRANSX type files

Yeah this has really got me thinking...I want to get a full set of ship recognition manuals WITH counters for them. At that point (minus cloaking and tactical heading changes, ETC) then I'd have a complete game and for the first time a chance to play ships I never wrote an MPC for. Pretty much all of the new ships on Brad's site.

funny that people who made DS9 and the doninion war thought fasa was too military. Also that CBS hates people who like star trek.
I got my copy of this just in time.

It is going to take folks like us that will keep this game going in the future. I have spent a lot of time archiving the FASA stuff, and this game is part of that archive i have put together. Well at least the 2.05 version of it.
I enjoy the FASA work, I think it is more believable then what Paramount has put out!!! FASA actually in the RPG spent a lot of time building back story, plot development and so on...it was great work.
