I got 2.05 beta running on my WinXp and Vista computers. I had trouble with the Win10 computer, though. I think the problem is that the STSTCS installer over-wrote the original TransPicture.ocx file with an older version, thus breaking dependencies. I downloaded the latest version and used the procedure here www.dllfixis.com/TransPicture.ocx.html. Ignore the pictures since they use a different file as an example. Anyway, the process will uninstall then re-install the ocx file to the registry using the command line. STSTCS works good now, although the phaser/disruptor graphics don't work well.

Nice work @kmart4949
Too bad the project got axed... It is an excellent port of the game and I really had a lot of fun with it.

It really needs to be rebuilt under a euphemism on Unity. Only the "Star trek" name would get it noticed, I mean, someone built the whole first edition x-wing miniatures in Unity, and that one is not only free to play but has online multi-player support with password access.
Does anyone want to try it? PM me!
I think this could be rebuilt, but I sure as hell couldn't do it/model it. Maybe a Patreon? the only problem with hiring programmers is their capacity to steal your project idea and market a better version under another name.
You can't really trust some of them, but hey they got the skills so learn or burn I guess.

It could possibly work under Unity as long as the Personal Version contained enough functionality for it (I suspect it does).

I am a hobby programmer. These days I mostly use XOJO for my projects (I can compile for Win, Linux and OSX with it). My biggest work so far is SimPlot2, which allows people to play the turn based Harpoon4 miniatures game either alone or through the Internet using a referee. The program itself does not implement any H4 rules (to avoid infringement). It does, however, provide a graphical display of unit positions with additional support from background maps, range circles, ESM/Sonar bearing lines, and text tags. When played with a referee, he can control what information is sent to opposing players to preserve the fog of war (unlike a tabletop game).

We loved harpoon (command edition)...also the referee sounds like an awesome idea. Most tabletop games lack the element of surprise for that very reason (opponent can see what you are doing) so it seems like a neat fix.

Harpoon is a great game....I play it on the computer sometimes, even though in later versions had some bugs....
But the best version of Harpoon is still the pencil and paper game....

So... for those of us entering the thread a few years too late, what are the chances of being able to set this up on windows 10? I've seen alot of conflicting info reading through the 6 pages.

I have it running on three computers that operate Windows 10, To get it to work i had to hand register some files myself into the registry but there are instructions on the net for hat.
Files can be found in many of the VBRUN files. I don't have time now, but when i do I will post links to the instructions and the old VBRUN files!!!

It looks like I have all the files needed. Just not sure of the Mod is OK with someone posting the files of a game the owner of Star Trek ordered shut down (Were I the Mod, I would say "NO").
► Duh... The downloads still work at THIS WEBSITE: [ LINK]

Thanks for all the tips! I got it mostly working (doesn't crash but the window locks up frequently and I have to leave and reenter it). Whoever designed the weapons layout of the Excelsior should be hauled in front of Starfleet Command and stripped of their rank, lol. Those FH-5's are worthless on that ship!
While I got the game working, I haven't tried out the ship builder yet. I might try converting a few of my blog ships assuming I get the permission from the various artists.

I don't think I'll invest the time to do so but if you're a fan then power to you! It was my first time using the Mk I as back in the day (the early 90's in my case) we always used the Mk II. For me at least the layout, numbers, and type of weaponry on that one just felt both more enjoyable and more effective for our playstyles. YMMV.

The Mk-I Excelsior is certainly a "Style of Play" ship, and cowboy40 is right, once you've figured it out, she's quite the formidable opponent. It really comes down to players being too dependent on torpedoes. Since the torpedoes in the Mk-I are fixed fore and aft, you are really restricted to pointing the nose at your opponent.
The Mk-I shines though in the sweeping broadsides it can deliver, especially when outflanking an opponent. With so much power available, it isn't hard to push the Mk-I to 9 movement points (54), power up two shields on one side (10) and charge up the Starboard phasers to full (20 points/FH-11, 16 points/FH-5). That's 100 points from 108. For the most part, 9 movement points is more than adequate to outmaneuver someone, and since the PC game seems to cap out at 9MP regardless of how much power you put into movement, you can almost guarantee you won't be outmaneuvered.
And out of that barrage, you can get a fair amount of damage if you include the modifiers, and generally you can use that torpedo dependence to your advantage since most players, and the computer A.I. for that matter, usually powers up only the front shield.

I toyed around with making a custom ship and got one working in a modified scenario. I might end up putting a "how to" blog article on getting the game to work as well as posting a few custom ships up for use as well that I've already converted into FASA.

Here's the "How To" guide article that I just put up on my blog. Hope it helps! Thanks for all the help and links posted here!
Someone posted on facebook that it worked for them which is a relief; I wanted to make sure I didn't make a mistake in remembering the process and that it wasn't just a one time fluke!

Yes i should have, but time gets away when you are working. And well we did need an install guide!!!! So, thanks for putting that up ALOS...... I should have, I tend to put custom vessels in the game a lot!!!! Even back in the days, we would use the ship construction manuals and build our own ships, and play them out in paper. That is part of the flexibility of this system!!!!

I have worked with computers for the past 30 some years....long before the days of plug and play.....i got started fixing computers back in high school in the 1980's. I missed those old machines to the point i am collecting them now! Most Techs coming out of the training programs don't even know what a DIPP switch is!!!!

I remember DIP switches. Kinda like re-pinning a connector to change the mode of a "black box"... but much easier. Check out the 8-bit guy. [ LINK]
