I've been meaning to make this thread for some time, will have some time this weekend to post some stuff and finish it off with a new design me and another former are working on.
Have you ever designed something that looked so close to what showed up in the show later that you thought they stole it somehow? Prepare to be surprised.

A friend of mine showed me a bunch of starships he had drawn. He called them "Darts". The were basically normal Federation fare, but the saucers were stretched forward and pointy.
A few years later, ZANG! Voyager.

Yes. Twice.
The first was a ship I named after my cadet corp, the R.C.S.C.C. MacKenzie, which is named after a destroyer/escort ship in the Canadian Navy, the H.M.C.S MacKenzie (the ship has subsequently been scrapped). The U.S.S. MacKenzie was also a destroyer/escort. I designed it to be atmosphere friendly with variable geometry warp nacelles that moved up and down into position for warp drive or atmospheric flight and landing gear that extended from the lower secondary hull. I designed it when I was 15... in 1985! Other than the elongated primary hull of Voyager the ships are almost identical. The MacKenzie had a standard circular primary hull, but the ends were tapered down to a single deck for better atmospheric handling. I will have to look, but I might have the original outline drawing printed out somewhere since the original work I did on my computer of the time (an Atari520ST) has long been extinct.
The second one I've posted and made the comparison to already is my Ozark class, of which the Centaur class bears a very striking resemblance.

Oddly enough, when we played the RPG in the late 80s, we came up with a new setting which involved a vessel with advanced transwarp drive, suspended animation for the crew, to be used to get them to the far side of the Galaxy! So Voyagers setting, and the fast version of transwarp used in Voyager by various races, made just after the Borg were introduced in TNG! And we in the UK were only getting Season One of TNG back then. Can't remember what ship we modified, but I was going to use some of the races from the GURPS Aliens supplement. Looking forward to seeing what starship designs you post here, rabid . Mark

First up is the Z-3 War Falcon. I opted to upload this as is, I just don't have time to redesign it although I would love to. Also I don't mean to be low rent but I just scanned it out of my board game. So I hope you like the "pen and paper" aesthetic. I drew this WAY BACK in high school....obviously tracing the back half of the z-1 nova but adding some bird flourish suggestive of TNG but not quite, it's a kit bash I was really proud of at the time and this ship saw a lot of action in our home campaigns. Since the romulans are meant to be developing their tech evolving toward the 'd-daridex', the bird nose looks a bit ungainly and unrefined.
Designed to replace the z-1 nova, the War Falcon quickly captured the hearts and minds of the Romulan People as the Praetor's flagship. The intimidating predatory design of the command pod was said to light up with the heat of plasma torpedoes before firing, tracing out the shape of a fiery phoenix as the plasma exhaust vented from the nose over the wings. A marvel of romulan engineering, and one of the few ships to equip standard and RPL Torpedo technology, the War Falcon truly lived up to the motto emblazoned on it's commissioning placard Ke'vad vala vastaama "A falcon soars...above the fires of War".
If you use the rules as written, the Romulan Plasma Torpedo has some interesting effects and can demolish smaller ships in a single blast if you spread the damage like an explosion. This is why the z-3 has so many of them. Our local 'meta' was me, my younger brother and a few friends, one favored tactic was to force a close range engagement with small ships in hopes of triggering an explosion. The z-3 can mitigate that, leaving a useless and not-quite destroyed destroyer if the dice favor. You pop the shields open with 1 or 2 torps and then torch the hull bare with the searing heat of romulan plasma weaponry!
I traced this out back at the start of TNG.
And I was surprised to see the Romulan Shuttle in DS9 with essentially the same lines.
memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Romulan_shuttle www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/factfiles/romulan-shuttle-3views.jpg
So I just started using the Romulan Shuttle counter in campaigns.

High praise considering the source! If you want to play around with any of these be my guest! That goes for any of you starship designers whose skill i envy so.

I was so inspired by rabid's ship, I came up with a cool idea I wanted to try on a V-8 Bird of Prey. It was a little slow at werk, so I went to the internet and grabbed the page form the FASA recognition manual and I printed it... on my boss' printer. I never had a chance to intercept the printout... I got some stank eye, but that's pretty much it.

I broke the rules with 2 torpedo types...and I know I was methodical when I first laid this down but I can't build it again using the starship construction XLS, it's too heavy.
Still, a fun design, even better with RAW plasma torps.

Still, a fun design, even better with RAW plasma torps. I've made up Romulan designs with two torp types, usually heavy forward and lighter aft (see my Phoenix class for example, designed by me and another player in our group), but my Firehawk class Missile Cruiser has both plasma and photon torpedoes forward. It can be considered overkill, of course. But I don't think the Manual says you can't do it.

Oh man, Atolm, that is gorgeous! Gorgeous! Forgive me for whining here, but when will you do a Kephan ship? Pretty please with whatever-sweetener-you-wish on top?

I really like this design but hate to be that guy and ask, no cloaking device?

No cloaking device. I think class 13 can still equip one but the nova doesn't have it.
Probably could be included in a MK II. I still can't get over Atolm's awesome redraw! (It's the home screen on my iPhone now)
Seems like it's a catchy ship aesthetically, more variations of it would be great!

Thanks guys, but this is not my design, its Rabid's baby...all I did was draw what I saw in the shapes. I'll see what I can do for some more views.
