Luger - not Ruger (totally different thing)!
Anyway yes, since the "handle" of the type-2 Phaser was the power pack, I could imagine just removing that and installing a larger assembly built as a stock.
Crocheted Spock hair and ears?!?

Captures the effect of basic human nature on science AND is funny as hell. Man I miss that comic.

I've never heard of basic human nature making Scientists entirely miss a phenomenon on mistake, because it was spoken in another language. Due to ideology, yes, but not due to missing the forest for the trees. Without supporting references, it seems a false statement.

Well... maybe not so "Completely Different"... seems we have cause for debate at this point. Since the caption is in English, and since most of the members of this forum are from the U.S. it is understandable that we would assume these researchers are American, and would therefore easily recognize Spanish. Since these researchers also seem to be clueless, I'm sure our Canadian and English members have also concluded that they are form the U.S. They may, however be from Australia where Spanish is not as likely to be instantly recognized (Does "magandang umaga" seem like something we would immediately pin down as a commonly spoken language, or something I just made up?). Who knows, maybe they get that "Eureka moment" it on the 40th response (as they appear to be in the early stages of gathering data, they have not yet missed this mark, but are in the "What the heck" phase). It also seems likely that once they review the data and do a bit of research they will have the light-bulb moment and continue on with what is likely to be some very interesting research. It also seems to be assumed that since the guys are wearing lab coats, have beards, bad hair, and glasses that they must be scientists of some sort. They could, however, be middle aged incompetent weirdos with bad fashion sense and an odd fondness for animals, like the lab-coated gentlemen in the following cartoon: Or... it could be a Farside cartoon, and not something to delve too deeply into. As with this installment. Sound boards don't actually have "Suck" knobs, so this is totally fanciful and meant as an entertaining distraction, not a statement on Roadies, Sound Technicians, or the Music Industry as a whole.

irony.exe has crashed.
if i have to explain it...the cartoon is funny because the scientists are trying to see if dolphins can speak english, in fact they can communicate fine in spanish, something that the scientists aren't testing for specifically, and it's the right answer but not in the form they understand.
This comic speaks to human limitiations. Yes, it happens in science all the time. Looking for specific results can lead to tunnel vision and possibly missing simultaenous and serendipitous effects. For example, The discovery of penicillin was an accident, just so happened an observant researcher noted that bacteria didn't grow around penicillium mold. He could have just discarded it as a contaminant...it wasnt what he was looking for in that experiment.
"One sometimes finds what one is not looking for. When I woke up just after dawn on Sept. 28, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic, or bacteria killer. But I guess that was exactly what I did"
Alexander Flemming.
Back to the cartoon--if the scientists at hand noticed the pattern maybe they'll figure it out. Instead they are stuck on the "proper" response being "Hello".
But yeah it happens in science, unless one wants to avoid that consideration (and witty observation about human nature) by being too literal. Ironic.

The discovery of penicillin is not at all the same thing as the comic. Discovering penicillin is something we call "serendipity". The comic depiction is something we call "ignorance".

@ironnerd I saw that tactical display ST: II a while ago. Lol you just beat me to it. Nice video! Kind of puts the calamity of our little imaginary crews in this game into perspective eh?
Gorn The only difference between serendipity and ignorance is awareness.

No, the difference between serendipity and ignorance is education.
